Point your domain at your server

Your domain stays with the company you bought it from; you only tell it where your server is. You need the server's IP address and access to your domain's DNS settings.

Add an A record

Create an A record for the bare domain (often written as @), with your server's IPv4 address. If the server also has an IPv6 address, add an AAAA record too.

Add www

Create a CNAME record named www that points to the bare domain, so both addresses open the same site.

Check that it works

Changes usually show within minutes, sometimes up to a day. Check with dig +short example.com: when it answers with your server's address, the domain points to it.

Tip: Next step

Add a free TLS certificate so the site opens over https, as in Host WordPress.
